Germany’s Most Beautiful Cycling Regions

1. Rhine River Valley

Ride past the thundering Rhein Falls

Flowing from Lake Constance past the Rhine Falls, this stretch features vineyard-covered hills, medieval towns, and Roman ruins before reaching Strasbourg, where German and French influences come together in its half-timbered old town and Gothic cathedral.

2. Moselle River Valley

Explore the ancient Roman heritage of the Moselle Valley

Winding through Metz, Trier, and Cochem, this stretch is known for steep vineyards, Roman ruins, and castle-crowned villages, leading to Koblenz’s Deutsches Eck, where the Moselle meets the Rhine in a dramatic confluence.

If you love history, wine, and storybook scenery, our Roman Ruins of the Moselle River Cycling Tour is the perfect ride.

3. Elbe River Valley

Marvel at the magnificent rock formations of Saxon Switzerland National Park

Passing through Prague, Mělník, and Saxon Switzerland, this route weaves together historical cities and dramatic rock formations before reaching Dresden, the “Florence on the Elbe,” where stunning baroque architecture lines the riverbanks.

4. The Romantic Road

Fall in love at the real-life Disney Castle

Following an old medieval trade route, this area features Augsburg’s Renaissance charm, scenic lakes, and fairytale castles. Neuschwanstein Castle, near Füssen, is one of Germany’s most iconic sights.

Tips for Cycling in Germany

1. Check the weather – Rain showers can be unpredictable, especially along river routes and in the Alps. Always pack a lightweight rain jacket and check forecasts before setting out.

2. Stay hydrated – Water sources aren’t always frequent, especially in rural areas. Carry enough water and refill whenever possible.

3. Book in advance – Accommodations along popular cycling routes fill up quickly, particularly in peak season. Secure your overnight stays ahead of time to avoid last-minute stress.

4. Follow cycling rules – Germany’s cycling infrastructure is well-regulated. Stick to designated bike lanes, obey traffic signals, and use hand signals to indicate turns.

5. Carry cash – Many small cafés, guesthouses, and rural shops don’t accept credit cards, so keep some euros on hand for food and accommodations.

6. Watch out for Sunday closures – Many stores and services close on Sundays, even in larger towns. Plan to ensure you have food and essentials.

7. Respect nature – Stick to marked trails, avoid littering and follow conservation rules, especially in national parks and nature reserves.

Our tours are rated on a difficulty scale from 1 to 5 to help you choose the right experience:

  • 1/5 – Flat terrain with short daily distances (approx. 30 km), suitable for all fitness levels, including beginners.
  • 2/5 – Mostly flat with minor climbs (up to 200 m), averaging 40 km/day. Ideal for casual cyclists in good health.
  • 3/5 – Moderate distances (approx. 50 km/day) with some rolling hills and climbs up to 500 m. Best for recreational cyclists.
  • 4/5 – Longer daily rides (60+ km) with steeper climbs (500–1000 m), requiring solid endurance and climbing experience.
  • 5/5 – Designed for experienced cyclists, these routes feature long distances, demanding climbs, and challenging terrain.

Germany offers varied landscapes, from flat river paths along the Rhine, Moselle, and Elbe to rolling hills in Bavaria and the Black Forest. Most of our tours follow well-maintained cycling paths and quiet country roads, but some include gravel sections or climbs in hilly regions. Each itinerary provides details on daily distances and elevation gain to help you choose the right route.

Yes! Germany has one of Europe’s best cycling networks, with many long-distance routes following dedicated bike paths (Radwege) or quiet secondary roads. The Rhine and Moselle tours are mostly on cycle paths, while the Romantic Road and Bavarian Alps routes include sections on low-traffic roads with occasional climbs.

Germany’s major cities, including Munich, Berlin, and Freiburg, are very cycling-friendly, with extensive bike lanes, dedicated crossings, and clear road markings. Cyclists are expected to follow traffic rules, including using bike lights at night and respecting pedestrian zones where cycling may be restricted.

We partner with a range of high-quality hotels, guesthouses, and inns, ensuring comfort and authenticity. Since availability varies, especially in peak season, we confirm your accommodations after booking. You can find examples of typical lodging in our itineraries, though exact stays may differ.

Our tours are suited for road bikes, touring bikes, and e-bikes. Gravel bikes offer a versatile option, providing both speed on pavement and comfort on scenic backroads. If you’re cycling in hilly regions or covering long distances, an e-bike can be a great choice. If you choose an e-bike, prior experience is recommended, as they require different handling.

Yes! If you’re not bringing your own bike, we provide high-quality rentals, including:

  • Touring bikes (great for long-distance comfort)
  • Gravel bikes (ideal for mixed terrain)
  • Road bikes (for faster, performance-oriented rides)
  • E-bikes (offering pedal assistance for longer distances and hills)

All rentals include delivery, pickup, helmets, repair kits, and extra accessories upon request.

This tour met and exceeded our expectations. It was certainly challenging cycling for seniors but most of us did it all seven days. Scenery and culture of the islands was glorious. Guide and crew was superb!

We recently completed the cycling tour from Bled to Piran with Slovenia Cycling Holidays. All the organising and running of the tour was excellent. We had excellent communication with Anna during the planning and also excellent and very helpful advice during the trip from Timotej We were unlucky on the final day to strike severe thunderstorms which made the day very difficult and less enjoyable. The weather stopped us enjoying the wonderful scenery into Piran. Timotej offered to transport us, but we wished to complete the ride. We can wholeheartedly recommend this Company if you wish a good cycling adventure with very good accommodation along the way. Thanks Anja and Timothy

We booked a week long cycling trip through Timotej’s business. It was a self guided trip where Slovenia Cycling Holidays booked our hotels, arranged transfer of luggage between hotels, organized rented bicycles, and provided us recommended cycling routes. They provided us with a very well organized itinerary with information about the places we visited and recommendations for restaurants, etc. We had a few hiccups, but overall it was a great experience! Timotej was quick to respond to any questions or issues we encountered. This was a great way to discover Slovenia by bicycle. I highly recommend using them!
